NEWS CENTER - In a statement conveyed through the İmralı Delegation, Abdullah Öcalan said that the Kurdish-Turkish alliance must be given legal guarantees through legislative measures and added: “It is possible to live together as equals and in freedom in a democratic republic. Negative law must be transformed into positive law.”

 

Members of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) İmralı Delegation, Pervin Buldan, Özgür Faik Erol and Mithat Sancar, issued a written statement regarding their meeting with Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan yesterday. 

 

The statement said the five-hour meeting included discussions on political developments, the ongoing process, the building of a democratic society, and how the legal framework should be shaped. 

 

The statement read: As the DEM Party İmralı Delegation, we held a comprehensive meeting with Mr. Abdullah Öcalan after a long hiatus. During the meeting, we discussed in detail political developments in the region, the building of a democratic society, the current stage of the peace process, and how the legal framework should be shaped.

 

During the meeting, Mr. Öcalan made the following remarks to be shared with the public:

 

“We remain committed to taking steps in line with the spirit of the February 27 Call and to resolving the issue within the framework of the law of brotherhood. We are on the verge of transforming the historic Kurdish-Turkish alliance and unity, a historical reality in Anatolia and has remained inseparable throughout every critical period, into a legal framework. The truth that ‘If you separate the Turk from the Kurd, no Kurd remains; if you separate the Kurd from the Turk, no Turk remains’ makes it necessary to develop the legal principles of coexistence and equality. 

 

IT IS TIME TO ESTABLISH A LEGAL FOUNDATION

 

The time has come to establish a legal foundation that takes into account the sensitivities of all sides. Aware that patiently paving this path represents a historic opportunity, we must abandon simplistic, narrow approaches that do not serve the future and work together to build a shared life. Within the framework set out in the report prepared by the Turkish Grand National Assembly’s Commission on Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy, everyone must do their part to launch the legal and legislative process, completely remove conflict and weapons from the equation, and open a brand-new chapter. 

 

THE SHARED FUTURE OF ANATOLIA 

 

The Kurdish-Turkish alliance is the cornerstone of Anatolia’s shared future. Every step we take must be guided by the culture of these lands. Through legislative measures, it is possible to provide lasting legal guarantees for this alliance and to live together as equals and in freedom in a democratic republic. Negative law must be transformed into positive law.

 

History offers us an opportunity to build a shared life and open an entirely new chapter based on equality and justice. I firmly believe that we will seize this opportunity together.”

 

As the delegation, we also regard Mr. Öcalan’s important call as historic and once again reaffirm our determination to continue constructive dialogue with all relevant institutions, foremost the Turkish Grand National Assembly, to advance the process with a results-oriented approach, and to achieve a lasting solution based on the law of brotherhood.
